Here's today's entry in the Tracy Sharp/Jeff Mariotte dual blog interview:
TS: Craziest thing you haven't done but want to do?
JM: I want to install a zip line at the ranch. The Flying M Ranch, where I live in southeastern Arizona, is not a working ranch--we call it a word ranch, because that's mostly what we produce there. But we have lots of acreage, and there's a good-sized hill in the south pasture. I think it's a perfect spot for a zip line, starting from up on the hill and ending near the house. My son agrees. My wife holds a different opinion of the idea.
It's still pretty early in your career, so you probably haven't thought about this...but how would you like to be remembered, as a writer. What will people in the future take away from your books?
TS: My hope is to be remembered as a really good storyteller. I want people to feel that reading my books was time well spent.
You own a book store. Is this your day job or is it a hobby?
JM: Bookselling was a day job for many years, but around the same time Mysterious Galaxy opened up, I got a different day job, working for a comic book publisher. That led to writing comics and eventually novels, and it paid enough that we could afford to be bookstore owners. These days I'm very hands-off. My wife and our other partner work hard on the store, along with our terrific staff (staffs, now that the second store is opening up--first store in San Diego, second in Redondo Beach), but I'm pretty much the silent partner.
What work, by somebody else, do you wish you had written?
Wait! Don’t answer that until you’re back at your blog!
